MALE BREAST REDUCTION (GYNECOMASTIA)

Gynecomastia is the medical term for the development of abnormally large breasts in males. The problem is usually caused by a combination of excess breast glandular and fatty tissue. It may affect only one breast or both and most of the time, there is no known cause. Although not commonly talked about, this condition is relatively common. It affects around 40 to 60% of all males. Gynecomastia is often a source of emotional distress. Feelings of embarrassment, shame, anxiety and humiliation are common and many men resort to wearing thick shirts and avoiding activities which would expose their chests.

If you are struggling with this condition and feel self-conscious about your appearance, breast-reduction surgery (either liposuction, gland excision, or a combination of these surgical techniques) can be of great help to enhance your appearance and your self-confidence. The procedure removes glandular and fatty tissue from the breasts, resulting in a chest that is flatter, firmer, and better contoured.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why should I get breast reduction surgery?
This is a very common condition among men. It is a straight forward procedure to perform and permit a man to be comfortable about removing his shirt and showing his chest.

What can I expect during and after my surgery?
This surgery is performed under local anesthesia and it lasts for 1 to 1 ½ hour. Just a minor discomfort is present and a vest is applied to keep compression on the area and this is worn for 3-4 weeks.

When can I get back to normal?
Most male breast reduction patients can resume to normal life the next day and at least 4 weeks to resume normal sports activities that require arm movements. Light jogging and running may start after 2 weeks.

Will there be scars?
The incision site approximately 1-2 mm only (like a pen hole), so once it healed it will be unnoticeable, there is no scar unless the patient is a keloid scar former.

Will the fat cells comeback after the liposuction?
Fat cells have a definite number, they do not regenerate or multiply, whenever we become fat they increase in size but not in number. After liposuction, the numbers of fat cells are decreased, and since they do not regenerate, you can never be the same size as what you were before.
